The paper presents results of the Ecology Program of the GTZ (German Agency for Technical
Cooperation) in Porto Alegre, Brazil.
It has been evaluated the suitability of the lizard-species Hemidactylus mabouia as an indicator
of an environmental quality zonation in the urban area. Different accumulation levels of the heavy
metals lead, cadmium and zinc have been exhaustively analysed as well as in other components of its
food chain. Considering the suitability of the species as an bioindicator more studies utilizing its
potentiabilities will be carried out in the future in order to assess the presence of pollutants in brazilian
urban ecosystems.
