Abstract:
During 3 years, we collected 150 alevins measuring 15 to 50 mm of standard length in the floodplain of the Rio Solimões. The individuals were grouped by size class and sampling data. For these
groups we measured the biomass of the main food items, total food dry weight and ash free food dry
weight. The primary food items were algae, Rotatoria, Cladocera and detritus. The quantities of
Cladocera and Rotatoria normalized to fish weight declined with the size of the fish. The opposite
situation was found for algae. The ash free dry weight of food also diminished as size increased. Algae,
Rotatoria and Claclocera totalled only 10 % of the organic matter ingested while 45 % was detritus.
