Abstract: Microalgal cells may be either weak, moderate or strong absorbers of ultraviolet radiation depending both on the wavelengths of the radiation and on their cellular size. I discuss some of the implications of this variability for their photobiology, especially for the sensitivity of microalgal cells to ultraviolet exposure, for the interpretation of action spectra, and for the use of sunscreen compounds.
