Abstract:
The floating vegetation and the littoral vegetation of some shallow lakes near the mouth of the
Rio Ypané were investigated. Transects were established for the study of: 1. the initial stages of a
'floating meadow' (= 'embalsado') on a small nutrient rich lake, 2. two 'embalsados' - probably developed
differently - on lakes, which seem to be so-called 'Umlaufseen' on a 'fossil' flood-plain generated by the
Rio Ypané, 3. the zonation of the vegetation on the margin of one of the oxbow lakes along the Rio
Ypané. The communities especially of the grazed margins along these lakes seem to be widespread in the
subtropical region of South America.
