Young trees of the legume species, Macrolobium acaciaefolium, can survive submerged in the Central
Amazonian inundation forest near Manaus, Amazonas during floods lasting as long as 312 days. This paper
describes the environmental conditions to which these plants are exposed during the terrestrial, or emersion,
and during the aquatic, or submerged phases in the white- and blackwater inundation forests. It also provides
information on the anatomical, morphological, and physiological adaptations that make survival under these
adverse conditions possible.
