Abstract:
Environmental factors and primary production of phytoplankton were studied in Lago do Rei, an island
lake in the Central Amazon, in order to improve the knowledgment of mechanisms that govern the
productivity of tropical equatorial lakes.
Results show that Lago do Rei is the most productive amongst the studied lakes to date, and that
productivity is controlled not only by nutrient availability, but also by light interactions.
