要旨:
Land use systems in the Amazon estuary have shifted periodically in response to the ebb and flow of indigenous cultures and increasing market integration. People have occupied the varoius islands at the mouth of the giant river for some 30,000 years and have constantly re-arranged the biological furniture. This essay explores the ramifications of human-induced environmental change for biodiversity conservation and development in the estuary of the world's largest river and underscores the importance of local knowledge of natural resources.
