Abstract: Astrocytes are a key mediator or an indirect effector for brain-state dependent neurovascular coupling. Conventional views consider astrocytes to play critical roles to mediate neurovascular coupling. However, recent studies have shown more evidence that the evoked vasodilation maybe
independent of astrocytic activity. In our recent work, we used simultaneous fMRI and cell-type specific calcium recordings to specify a unique linkage of astrocytes with neuronal firing patterns, as well as the whole brain BOLD signal changes. It indicates that astrocytes may play regulatory roles to
mediate brain state changes. More detailed causality studies are proposed to specify such novel roles played by astrocytes to mediate brain state fluctuation.
