Abstract:
In Lake Constance, the phytoplankton growth season starts when stratification begins in spring. Initially, maximum growth rates are favored; later, as the water column stabilizes, zooplankton grazing and competition for nutrients become the dominant selective forces. When the mixing depth increases in autumn, algae that can tolerate low light are selected for. Temperature and sedimentation turn out to be less important in succession than traditionally assumed.
