 Abstract: Recent electrophysiology and human neuroimaging studies indicate that selective attention to different stimulus features enhances both expectation-induced and stimulus-evoked activities in specific areas of the visual cortex. From behavioral studies, we know that cholinergic projections from the basal forebrain to the neocortex play an important role in selective attention. Here, we propose that acetylcholine (ACh) modulates the relative influence of top-down and bottom-up inputs on neural representation by reporting on the uncertainty of top-down biases. We illustrate our proposal by means of a hierarchical inference model, showing that cholinergic control of selective top-down biases leads to appropriate modulation of sensory-evoked activities, similar to attention-related effects seen in experiments. This work on cholinergic modulation of sensory processing is an analogy to previous studies on learning and memory that suggested ACh reports on unfamiliarity and controls effective network connectivity. Evidence that ACh selectively suppresses feedback and not thalamocortical inputs, and that it has a modulatory effect on stimulus-evoked activities in anesthetized animals, puts ACh in a uniquely appropriate position to play a specific role in gating top-down expectations in visual processing.
