 Abstract: Most of the biological stimulus-response systems show adaptation: the sensitivity of a system changes with stimulus intensity. The change of the sensitivity does not follow the change of the stimulus intensity immediately. Thus, the kinetics of the adaptation must also be studied in order to understand stimulus-response events. The applicability of the laws of Weber and Fechner are discussed in this chapter. The adaptation of the fungus Phycomyces to light is described in detail. The analysis carried out by Delbruck and Reichardt resulted in a mathematical model, which accounts for the kinetics of the light adaptation. Based on the results obtained with Phycomyceas model was developed to describe certain properties of the human visual system. This attempt succeeded in describing the dependence of the subjective brightness upon the modulation frequency of the sinusoidally modulated retinal illumination (Brucke effect). The model also accounts for the influence of the average brightness upon the amplitude threshold at a given modulation frequency.
