Abstract: Environmental factors are among the strongest risk factors for psychiatric disorders. Differences in exposure to such environments have been associated with lasting biological changes. In recent years epigenetic mechanisms have been brought to the forefront as central in mediating alasting embedding of environmental risk factors. This article first summarizes the different levels of epigenetic regulation and then focuses on mechanisms transducing environmental signals into lasting epigenetic changes. This is followed by examples of how environmentally induced epigenetic changes relate to risk and resilience to psychiatric disorders and their treatment.
