Abstract: Two types of signals are used by nerve cells: graded potentials and action potentials. The graded potentials are passively conducted and play an important role at special regions such as at junctions between cells. The action potentials are conducted, regenerative impulses that do not decrease over distances. Recent research suggests that localized graded potentials may play an essential information processing role and underly the integrative function of neurons; action potentials mainly serve a transmission and transduction purpose (Kuffler and Nicholls, 1977).
