 Abstract: In a recently published paper 9 a system-theory for the optokinetic reactions of the beetle Chloro-phanus viridis was reported. The theory allows quantitative predictions of reactions to known stimula­tions. The following paper deals with predictions of optokinetic responses to periodic light patterns.The calculated response curves are accordant with experiments of Hassenstein. The main results are:1. Optokinetic responses to moving periodic patterns can be considered as the superposition of partialresponses to moving Fourier- components of which the patterns are composed. 2. The responsesdepend on the squared amplitudes of these Fourier- components and not on the standard deviationof light signals in the pattern. 3. The phase relations of Fourier - components — contained in thepattern — have no influence on the optokinetic reactions; therefore the responses are invariant tophase shifts of pattern components. 4. Application of the theory to former experiments by Hassenstein reveal, that the effective visual angles of ommatidia are in the range of 1.2 degree.
