Abstract:
The oscillatory kinetics of CO oxidation over a (111)-oriented platinum crystal at an oxygen pressure of 10−2 mbar is observed. This is surprising because it cannot be explained by the reconstruction model commonly utilised to describe oscillations on Pt(110) and Pt(100). Additionally, with a relatively new imaging technique (EMSI), island growth is observed on the surface, exhibiting a feature that has not been observed previously with PEEM (photoemission electron microscope). By combining these two experimental results, an explanation in terms of oxidation reduction cycles of the surface becomes plausible.
