Abstract:
A series of submonolayer coverages of alkali metals on Be(0001) is used to vary the position of the vacuum level (EV) systematically, and the steplike contribution to the inverse photoemission (IPE) spectrum at EV is found to shift uniformly with EV. Steplike intensity onset at EV is common to almost all IPE spectra from metals in normal incidence, and is observed with a cross-section similar in magnitude to many bulk-derived features. We assign the step to emission into surface continuum final states. The available data on the energy dependence of the cross-section of this emission indicates that an unexplored mechanism is responsible.
