Abstract: The silver-rich ternary oxides Ag6Si2O7, Ag10Si4O13, Ag6Ge2O7, and Ag10Ge4O13, as well as Ag2SO4, have been investigated with photoelectron spectroscopy. The Ag 3d core level binding energies in all four ternary oxides were found to be identical with that of Ag metal, compared to the small negative chemical shift observed in AgSO4 and most other silver compounds. The MgKα and HeI valence band spectra are both dominated by Ag 4d emission; at the lower photon energy O 2p-derived states are also observed. There is some evidence for a direct Ag 4d-O 2p interaction.
