Abstract: Ferromagnetic resonance under ultrahigh vacuum conditions was used to study the magnetic properties of small cobalt particles deposited on the reconstructed surface of a sapphire single crystal ((31x31)R±9° Al2O3(0001)). The intensity of the resonance line decreases after CO adsorption but the signal is not totally quenched. Therefore, only the atoms in the outer sphere of the cluster are influenced and a magnetic core still remains. STM measurements of Co particles on a thin alumina film Al2O3/NiAl(110) support this assumption of three-dimensional growth.
