This issue of Cellular Physiology and Biochemistry presents a series of short reviews on recent developments of structure and function of P-type ATPases. These enzymes represent a class of integral membrane proteins that transport cations across cell membranes. A common characteristic is that they become temporarily phosphorylated at an aspartate residue during the transport cycle. Another feature that allows to distinguish P-type ATPases from other ion-motive ATPases is the fact that vanadate specifically inhibits the enzyme activity.
