Abstract: Until recently our knowledge on the renal handling of lactate was based on clearance experiments [e.g., 9,14,17,25]. These studies suggested that filtered lactate is reabsorbed along the nephron and found only in minor quantities in the final urine. Studies on the renal transport of lactate, or handling of lactate in almost any tissue, are complicated by the fact that lactate is an important metabolic substrate and/or intermediate. Thus, the metabolic conversion and the endogenous production of lactate during transport experiments create experimental and interpretative obstacles. The present knowledge on the renal transport of lactate is based mainly on recent experiments using electrophysiological, biochemical, as well as microperfusion techniques, designed to overcome the problems related to the metabolism of lactate.
