Zusammenfassung:
At first the following potential problem is solved: Two infinitely long cylinders with radii R1, R2 and dielectric constants ϵ1, ϵ2 are placed in a static transverse homogeneous field with an otherwise arbitrary orientation. The interaction between the cylinders is then evaluated. By suitable transformations, solutions are found in closed form in terms of rapidly convergent series. R1 = R2, ϵ1 = ϵ2 is treated as a special case. In very “unsymmetrical” cases (R > R2, ϵ1 ϵ2 < 0), unexpected changes of sign of the forces are found, which are due to “image forces”. The results for a static field carry over for alternating fields, provided that dielectric losses do not contribute significantly.
