 Abstract: The contribution of the pentose cycle to glucose metabolism was determined in isolated monkey palm eccrine sweat glands incubated in the presence of Mecholyl, norepinephrine, or isoproterenol. The amount of glucose metabolized via the pentose cycle, both in absolute terms (nanomoles per gland per hour) and relative to the total glucose utilized (percent), was significantly enhanced by both epinephrine and isoproterenol. Propranolol (p- adrenergic antagonist) markedly suppressed the stimulatory effects of epinephrine and isoproterenol. Dibutyryl cyclic AMP + theophylline mimicked the effect of isoproterenol. Theophylline alone had no effect. Mecholyl did not enhance the relative (percent) contribution of the pentose cycle to overall glucose metabolism, but increased the absolute amount of glucose metabolized by the pentose cycle although to a much lesser extent than adrenergic drugs. The data suggest that the pentose cycle is activated by P-adrenergic stimulation and that the stimulation is mediated by intracellular cyclic AMP.
