Abstract: In contrast to earlier, largely empirical methods of wave prediction, modern wave models normally start from a common, physically accepted basis: the energy-balance or wave-transport equation. However, considerable differences still exist between different models regarding the structure of the source function in this equation. Although systematic comparisions have not been made, different models may be expected to yield significantly different predictions when applied to non-uniform wind fields exhibiting the complex space-time structures typical of many generation situations.
