 Abstract: The transport properties of a membrane system consisting of a cation exchange membrane separating two aqueous potassium chloride solutions are studied far from equilibrium. It is found that the linear laws of nonequilibrium thermodynamics describe the transport properties of the system in a much wider range of driving forces than is commonly understood by the term “close to equilibrium”. The non-linear effects observed far from equilibrium are described by integral transport equations.
