Abstract: It has been very difficult to incorporate active transport within the framework of irreversible thermodynamics. At first sight, it is hard to understand how it is possible that a chemical reaction forces a flow of an inert substance in a certain direction. A first thermodynamic approach was made by Kedem (1961) and generalized by Sauer (1973), who was able to show that active transport is not a local but a global property of the membrane. This will be illustrated by a simple membrane model system, which is able to show active transport in a clearway (Meyer, 1973).
