Abstract: The composition and structure of the Au(111) surface has been studied by STM during chloride-induced dissolution. Long-range ordered dimer images were obtained and interpreted, because of their molecular dimensions, as (AuCl3)2 species. It is argued that our approach to analyzing STM-data may be generally useful in identifying surface compounds.
