 Abstract: Over billions of years nature has evolved efficient biological systems. Synthetic biology aims at developing human-made mimics of these systems that provide alternative, more efficient solutions to natural processes, or perform tasks not (yet) found in natural systems. Here we discuss how synthetic biology can be used to design and realize novel enzymes and metabolic networks for the capture and conversion of carbon dioxide. We further discuss the strategies an challenges for transplanting these new CO2-fixing processes into natural and artificial cells.
