Abstract: A classical tool for investigating the chemical nature of certain substances within the cell is the inactivation spectrum after irradiation with visible or ultraviolet light. With this method Swenson found that nucleic acid must be an essential part in the adaptive enzyme synthesis of the galactozymase system. In this paper the authors investigated the UV-action spectrum of the induction of a specific enzyme in Bacterium cadaveris. The conditions of the lysine decarboxylase induction have been investigated by Gale and Epps and Mandelstam. The latter author showed, that the manometrically measured activity of the decarboxylase is proportional to the amount of enzyme protein within the cell.
