Abstract: South Eastern Huastec is a Mayan language spoken by about 12,000 speakers in the southern Huasteca region, in the north of the Mexican state of Veracruz. The highest concentration of these speakers is found in the village of San Francisco Chontla, where I spent several years documenting the language and culture. This project won a SOAS ELDP (School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London Endangered Languages Documentation Program) grant and a Mexican Government scholarship.
