 Abstract: The adsorption of hydrogen and deuterium on platinum-containing and platinum-free HNaY zeolites at room temperature was studied gravimetrically. Enhanced adsorption leading to ratios H/Pt and D/Pt more than one order of magnitude larger than the amounts corresponding to adsorption on platinum alone was found on Pt/HNaY. This effect has to be explained by spillover, i.e. the diffusion of hydrogen and deuterium onto the zeolitic support. As expected, the mass gain due to deuterium adsorption was twice that due to hydrogen adsorption. TPD of the adsorbed deuterium reservoir after spillover results in desorption peaks for HD and D2at about 400 K. Studies of the kinetics at various temperatures gave insight into the mechanism of hydrogen and deuterium spillover on Pt/HNaY zeolite
