Abstract:
The vibrations of H chemisorbed on the Ru(001) surface at 90 K were studied using high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Several different sets of vibrational losses were observed as a function of H coverage θH. For theta;H < 0.3 a single loss was observed at 85 meV assigned to the Ru-H stretching mode and compatible with a threefold hollow site. At saturation coverage (θH ≈ 1) three modes were found at 90, 102 and 141 meV, indicating a reduced symmetry of the adsorption site.
