Abstract:
We report a high-resolution electron energy spectroscopy (HREELS) study of the coverage dependence of the Ru-CO and C-O stretch modes of chemisorbed CO on Ru(0001) at 300 K. For CO coverages θCO larger than 0.33 we observe remarkable frequency changes. Up to θCO=0.33 both frequencies increase due to lateral dipole coupling. For θCO>0.33, i.e. in the compression pha ν(C-O) increases even stronger whereas ν(Ru-CO) decreases. The decrease of ν(Ru-CO) gives direct evidence of the weakening o the bond between CO and the surface which correlates with the known thermal desorption and structural data.
