Abstract:
Besides a smaller fraction of H2O+, the interaction of H2 and O2 with a platinum field ion emitter produces mainly H3O+ via a novel surface reaction-field desorption pathway:
Hads+H2Of-ads→H3Ogas++ePt-
For this reaction, the H3O+ field ion appearance energy is measured as 9.2 eV, almost 1.5 eV smaller than the value reported earlier for the H2O/Pt reaction system. The new protonation pathway is verified through mass-resolved and energy-resolved experiments on product ions of the oscillating H2/H2O/Pt and D2/H2O/Pt reaction systems. For H2/O2/Pt, the H2O+ appearance energy data suggest a partial transfer of reaction enthalpy to desorbing H2O molecules.
