Reaction-diffusion fronts occurring during the oxidation of high-coverage CO layers on Pt{100} have been imaged with low-energy electron microscopy. Front propagation is strongly sensitive to the surface microtopography, giving rise to a discontininous, “stop-and-go” movement. Each front consists of a sequence of moving boundaries separating ordered adsorbed phases.
