Abstract:
Reconstruction onm Au(100) surfaces has been directly imaged by reflection electron microscopy (REM) with the minimum-exposure technique. Domains containing different superstructures coexist on these surfaces and display certain orientation relations. A (271272) reconstruction with large unit cells is inferred from the observed superlattice fringes which are highle sensitive to the observation direction in REM images. These large unit cells are considered to be generated by a long-range modulation on the (27-225) reconstruction. A model based on a compressed and twisted "Hex" overlayer on a square substrate is proposed to explain the reconstruction observed on these surfaces.
