Abstract: In this article, I reminisce about my fond interactions with John Torrence Tate (13 March, 1925-16 October, 2019), my teacher, mentor and PhD advisor. It is hard to trace the influence of Tate’s work on other works accurately, as the basic objects, ideas and theorems that he introduced have permeated (and have been generalized by others into widely used theories) throughout mathematics. I briefly describe his many fundamental contributions to number theory and arithmetic geometry, and end with some personal anecdotes.
