 Abstract: There are not only strongly crowded “proton sponges” that show characteristic [M-Me2NH-H]+ peaks corresponding to cyclization to stable, even electron heterocyclic ions under EI. Fragmentation of title compounds which are moderately strong, not very crowded bases also leads to abundant [M-Me2NH-H]+ phenanthridinium ions, as shown by linked scans, exact mass measurements, MS/MS and collisionally activated dissociation (CAD) mass spectra.
