Abstract: The potential of simultaneously recorded sky spectra in the thermal and
the near infrared spectral range to derive cloud properties is studied.
After a careful choice of high transmission micro-windows a large set of
spectra was collected during a dedicated measurement campaign of several
days duration with various cloud types. The EOF analysis shows that over
99% of the observed variability is explained by the first 4 EOFs. A
cluster analysis provided 7 clearly distinguished cloud classes,
containing some promise for automated cloud type recognition.
