Abstract: This historic account of electronic image recording first presents the theoretical foundations of the subject starting with the definition of the detection quantum efficiency (DQE). The various types of image intensifier are described. The primary pulse-height distribution of scintillators is examined, with sections on backscattering, light absorption and the energy dependence of the DQE. Analogue and digital image storage and the feasibility of on-line image processing are considered.
