Abstract: The synthesis of a comprehensive theory of insect aerodynamics is hindered by a poor knowledge of unsteady mechanisms. This study presents lift and drag measurements and simultaneous flow visualiza- tion of model Drosophila wings started from rest. Impulsive movement resulted in the production of a leading edge vortex that stayed anached to the wing for the first 2 chord lengths of travel, generating an 80% increase in lift compared to the steady state performance estimated 5 chord lengths later. As the leading edge vortex is shed, lift decays and a vortex of opposite sign develops off the trailing edge, eventually giving rise to a von Karman street behind the wing. It is argued that the transient augmentation is due to the process of detached vortex lift, analogous to the method of force production in delta wing aircraft. This transient increase of aerodynamic performance by unsteady mechanisms is strongly dependent on Reynolds number within the domain relevant for the flight of small flies (30> Re> 300). In contrast, the steady state performance of the models was constant within this same Re range. These results indicate how the unsteady process of vortex generation might be crucial for the production of flight forces in insects.
