Abstract: Creativity is an important, yet elusive, human characteristic. Despite strides in understanding creativity as a cognitive ability, there is a paucity of computational studies. Our work aims to fill this gap with a proposal for a computational investigation of the mechanisms underlying people’s evaluation and production of little-c creative artistic work. We fashion a tractably constrained experimental setting involving binary 5 × 5 pixel patterns, define a relevant taxonomy, describe various possible computational mechanisms, develop a series of behavioural experiments, and propose directions for analyses. Broadly, we aim to enrich the computational understanding of product and process creativity.
