Exposure to childhood maltreatment (CM) has consistently been linked to an increased risk for developing psychiatric disorders later on in life. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation (DNAm) have been proposed as a mechanism for the biological embedding of environmental exposures, including CM. This thesis aims to extend our understanding of the temporal dynamics of the biological embedding of CM via DNAm as well as the effects of concurrent exposures.
