Abstract: The research and development of electron microscopes coupled with in situ holders have made environmental analysis EM accessible to the general research community. These tools allow us to visualize nanoparticle nucleation, crystal growth, translation, self-assembly, transfer and chemical reactions under native conditions with sub-nanometer resolution, thereby, providing insight into their structural and compositional response to changes in those conditions. Herein, we will discuss the experimental applications of liquid phase TEM, comparing the different approaches that have been used to solve the incompatibility of a liquid sample with the vacuum environment and describe the recent applications in biology and materials science in this dynamic and evolving research field.
