Abstract: Nitrogen oxides (NOx) describe the sum of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) which are important trace gases in the troposphere, the layer closest to the earth’s surface. NOx has a profound influence on atmospheric photochemical processes which majorly impact local air quality and the formation of tropospheric ozone, which in turn affects the earth’s radiative budget and global warming. This work presents several studies on the sources and distribution of nitrogen oxides and their involvement in photochemical processes throughout the troposphere with the aim to improve our understanding of its role in tropospheric photochemistry and its effects on human health and climate change.
