Abstract:
It is demonstrated that direct and substrate-mediated excitation mechanisms in surface photochemical reactions can be discriminated based on the pronounced angular dependence of the electric fields at the vacuum interface of a transparent substrate covered with a thin metal film. We can unambiguously establish the change from a direct to a substrate-mediated excitation mechanism in the photodesorption of SO2 (hν = 6.4 eV) adsorbed on a quartz prism, with and without a 300 Å Ag film.
