Abstract: In this article, we present an overview of the vertebrate fossil fauna from South and Southwest Asia with a focus on, though not limited to, macromammals. We discuss the environmental and ecological setting to provide context to these faunal communities and changes therein. Further, we touch on key themes such as the hominin fossil record, megafauna extinctions, and the “savannization” of Southwest Asia and its implications for early Homo sapiens dispersals and hominin species interactions.
