Abstract: In order to explore the sensitivity of the climate to changes in solar output, comprehensive numerical models are needed that can reproduce the characteristic response of the climate system to changes in external forcing. Due to the inherent dynamic instability of the ocean and atmospheric circulation, a large number of internal processes do vary in the climate system, on timescales ranging from a few days to several hundred years. The fluctuations are not necessarily periodic, but often show up with distinct spectral amplitudes at a number of specific frequencies.
