Abstract: Some numerical techniques are developed which allow an efficient formulation of an ocean circulation model based on primitive equations. Density surfaces determine the vertical coordinates in the interior ocean. The proposed scheme allows an accurate treatment of density surfaces even if an arbitrary topography is chosen. The underlying idea is that each layer has its own horizontal boundary which may change its position with time. Vectorization can be easily done. The upper ocean is represented by a mixed layer. To illustrate how the coupling between the mixed layer and the interior ocean is treated the effects of a seasonal cycle are investigated. Finally a time step scheme is presented which allows an unconditionally stable and rather simple formulation of the primitive equations by splitting up the problem into a prediction and several correction steps. Each of these steps consists of a semi-implicit time step scheme.
