Abstract:
The μTEx experiment is a high-precision Penning-trap experiment where Zeeman and hyperfine splitting measurements are performed to test theories such as quantum electro dynamics (QED) and to determine fundamental constants. Such measurements have been carried out at μTEx for 3He+ and 9Be3+ and shall be performed for various other systems. At μTEx, the ions of interest are produced inside the sealed-off vacuum chamber containing the trap via laser ablation of a solid-state target, which was successfully done for beryllium. In order to produce and trap different ions, a target containing the isotopes of interest must be exchanged. Currently, a fair amount of effort is required to swap the targets due to the necessity of opening the inner vacuum chamber. The aim of this thesis is to develop a mechanism to be able to exchange targets more easy and reliable. For this purpose, an easily accessible target holder was added to the experimental setup where any target can be attached to without having to open the inner vacuum chamber. This target exchange mechanism was successfully tested with lithium-, copper- and beryllium- targets and has proven itself reliable, less prone to errors and more time efficient. In the course of these tests, the process of designing lithium targets by attaching lithium hydride with PLA to a copper-plate was of special interest because measurements with 6,7Li are planned at μTEx.
