Abstract:
At the Cryogenic Storage Ring (CSR) at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, collisions between neutral particles and ions can be studied at temperatures as low as (5.5 ± 1.0) K . Neutral particles are generated through photodetachment of a negative ion beam using a 2 kW laser diode system at 808 nm. This laser operates in either continuous wave (cw) or pulsed mode and its power is measured with a power meter. To monitor the beam position and shape in both cw and pulsed modes on the power meter, we characterized the working regime of a Raspberry Pi NoIR v2 camera module in a test setup with a 15 mW laser at 650 nm. Additionally, we estimated the necessary filters to avoid saturation on the camera for both the 15 mW and 2 kW lasers. The laser beam shape of a 10 mW laser diode at 650 nm was measured using the knife-edge technique, and the results agreed within errors with those obtained from the camera.
